Community Tourism Programs

BC works with the province's six Regional Destination Marketing Organizations (RDMO’s) and communities throughout the province on tourism development initiatives. Two community-based programs work closely with groups looking to develop tourism in their area for both the long and short-term.

The Community Tourism Foundations program is designed for communities seeking assistance in long-term destination planning. The Community Tourism Opportunities program provides implementation-level cooperative marketing support for communities that have identified specific tactics for moving their local tourism industry forward. Tourism BC also works with industry partners on a number of sport tourism initiatives. See below for more information on specific programs.

In 2010 our organization changed dramatically; new Board, Executive Director, mandate, funding partners and culture. We jumped at the opportunity to participate in this Governance Best Practices workshop as we believe in life-long learning! The timing was perfect as we are on the journey of becoming internationally accredited with DMAI. All whom attended enthusiastically agreed the workshop was of great value. Directors commented they “have a better understanding of how to be a more effective Board member.” We have an action plan and time line for our next steps. It was a pleasure to work with the facilitator as her knowledge and skills in the workshop were pure craftsmanship! Kudos to Tourism BC for organizing our workshop so quickly and efficiently! This workshop is a valuable tool in the pursuit of Excellence!” ~ Jo Knight, Destination Osoyoos
