Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation
Tourism Strategy and Policy
The Ministry works closely with the tourism sector and other government agencies to stimulate economic growth in the tourism industry in British Columbia, and is engaged in initiatives to ensure B.C. remains competitive in an ever-changing world of travel and leisure. The Ministry is committed to enhancing B.C.’s competitive position, jobs and economic certainty, by ensuring a positive business climate in which government programs and policies are conducive to supporting growth.
Tourism is a complex industry that is affected by legislation, policies, investments and practices by federal, provincial and local governments. Therefore, the Ministry works collaboratively across government to raise awareness on how to maximize the value of tourism while raising the profile of the sector as a key driver in growing a highly productive B.C. economy.
To ensure the interests of the tourism industry are considered, the Ministry is working with other levels and areas of government on key policy areas such as improved air access, border crossings, signage, and land decisions and processes, in order to identify and reduce regulatory barriers that inhibit tourism business growth.
2012-2016 Tourism Strategy
On October 25, 2011, Premier Christy Clark introduced a new strategy for the tourism sector called Gaining the Edge as part of Canada Starts Here: The BC Jobs Plan. This five-year plan maps out key areas of focus that will help tourism fulfill its true potential, stimulating sector growth with increasing visitation, revenue and employment.
